Ground, Honed & Polished Concrete
Polished and honed concrete is fast becoming the ultimate flooring finish as it gives superior durability and aesthetics. Retail, warehouse, and office facilities are opting for polished concrete floors. Even homeowners are catching on to the appeal of these smooth, high lustre floors. Ground/polished is achieved by mechanically grinding the concrete surface with a grinding machine until the surface is ground back to achieve the desired finish Ground concrete is typically a 3-4 step process, whereas Polished Concrete is typically an 8-10 step process, both features very different finishes.
Polished Concrete is a multi-step process where a concrete floor is mechanically ground, honed and polished with bonded abrasives in order to cut a concrete floor's surface. It is then refined with each cut in order to achieve a specified level of appearance. This process also includes the use of a chemical known as a hardener or densifier. The concrete densifier/hardener penetrates into the concrete and creates a chemical reaction to help harden and dust-proof the surface. During concrete polishing, the surface is processed through a series of steps utilising progressively finer grinding tools. The grinding tools are progressive grits of industrial diamonds in a bonded material often referred to as diamond polishing pads. Concrete is not considered polished before 400 grit, and it is normally finished to either the 400, 800, 1500, or 3000 grit level.
